Clairely Psycho #4

What’s the story behind your derby name?

Well I think it’s pretty self explanatory really!  ;o)

How long have you been skating for?

I have been skating with DCRA since June 2015, and finally got my wings in November 2015.  That 27/5 was NOT going to defeat me!

What’s your favourite thing about Roller Derby?

I cant pick one thing, its impossible!  I love working really hard on a skill and nailing it, I love skating fast, I love getting in the way of other people skating fast too!  I love the adrenaline rush when you hear “5 SECONDS…” I love that I have found a sport that is all inclusive, celebrates body shapes in whatever shape they come in. Most of all I love that I have found my second family within DCRA especially and the wider derby community.

What team or skater do you most look up to?

We are so lucky that our team is filled with truly remarkable and inspirational women, whom I admire more than they probably realise!  Our Summer Transfers Flying Kiwi and Legs have been a breath of fresh air and have lifted the team to new heights.  If I had to pick one person though, it would have to be my missus Laura Lockdown.  She is always at the right place at the right time on track, and Jammers tend to pull ‘THAT face’  when they see they have to get past her.  One day I want to inspire Jammer fear like she does!

Outside of DCRA I have taken on a side career as an announcer.  As a result of this I have been able to watch some truly inspirational teams and skaters,  These are just SOME of my favourite teams at present:  Rainy City Roller Derby, Tiger Bay Brawlers, 2×4 Roller Derby, Crime City Roller Derby, Kallio Rolling Rainbow, Helsinki Roller Derby, Stockholm Roller Derby  … (I’ve got a real thing for Scandinavian Roller Derby at the moment!)

I drag myself to literally EVERY boot camp I can possibly get to, and have spent so many hours watching tips and tricks from the very best. The most inspirational have been (in no particular order) 🙂  Juke Boxx & Ballistic Whistle (LRG & SDRD), Optimus Grime (GMRD), Missy Rascal (RCRD), Ella Storey (MRD), Dark Matter (TnF), Acid Pain & Carnage (WWC) nad the one and only Miracle Whips (NSOTB)

What is your preferred derby position?

I think I’m more suited to being a blocker – I’ve grown my butt especially for it!   I’ve taken on more offensive pivot duties this season and I’m really enjoying this new role.

What’s been your worst/best injury so far?

I broke my little finger (yes really) when doing my unexpected obstacles mins skill – but got straight back up and carried on and got the tick!  I’ve had a concussion or two and some truly epic bruises!

What’s the best game you’ve ever watched?

We were lucky enough to go to the Roller Derby World Cup in Manchester,  So many games – so much strength and skill!   The 2018 Euro cup also in Manchester where Kallio took a unexpected win over Stockholm Roller Derby.  I was lucky enough to announce that game and could hardly watch the last two jams!

04/03/17  Tyne & Fear and NWO.    If you were there you know why…  THAT LAST JAM!!!!!!

What would you say to anyone who was considering signing up for Fresh Meat?

Don’t be scared,  everyone starts off being terrified then before you know it you are jamming in a scrim and comparing bruises!

Come along to our fresh meat intake and see us in action, get inspired to strap some wheels on and away you go!!!
